I had the privilege and honour to be Oyu Tolgoi’s second CEO and to lead the business through construction and into operations - a period of massive endeavour and significant controversy.
A highly focussed executive team and supportive parent companies ensured OT was built ahead of schedule and quickly ramped up to nameplate capacity. The contributions of hundreds of companies and thousands of people (from 44 countries) were needed to build this mine – in the remote Gobi desert, devoid of all forms of necessary infrastructure.
Oyu Tolgoi (OT) is Mongolia’s largest ever mega project and now largest operating business – an engine of growth for Mongolia’s economy. Upon completion of the huge underground project it will remain Mongolia’s largest business for decades to come.
OT’s recently released book covers its 48 year history to date and is a testimony to the efforts of thousands of people and the heroes who had the courage to fund and fight for the development of the mine and business. It is highly recommended reading.
